1.     Introduction

The Parliament approved, in general, the Economic, Social and State Budget Plan (PESOE) for the year 2024 on December 7, 2023, subsequently, promulgated by the President of the Republic, the document entered into force on January 1, 2024.

Throughout the process of evaluation and discussion of the proposal by Civil Society with the Assembly of the Republic, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Health and others, recommendations were made that culminated in the preparation of an erratum and changes in the overall budget limits. With regard to the health sector, the Government proceeded, as informed during the hearings, to the registration of additional resources, in the amount of 25 billion Meticais, as presented in the erratum presented at the Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Republic.

The overall value of the State Budget for 2024 is increased from 542.7 to 567.8 billion Meticais, of which 59.8% is allocated to operating expenses, 28.6% to investment and 11.6% to financial operations. In this sense, this article aims to address in a synthetic way the budget evolutions for the health sector, based on historical data of budget allocations to assess what can be expected in 2024 for the health sector.
